The first small business featured on the ‘Getting to know’ series is Nurtured, Microgreens and Edible Flowers. Leisa answered a bunch of questions about her business and how Nurtured has become a favourite among local chefs and their menus.

Can you tell us a little bit about your small business and how/ why you started?

After growing our own microgreens for personal use we decided to expand and share our produce with the Sunshine Coast. Nurtured became our business in June 2017. Microgreens are a fairly new superfood to the western diet, we felt it needed to be shared with the public. They are extremely nutrient dense plants filled with so many health benefits. We began growing more and delivering samples to prospective new customers (including VanillaFood).

All our microgreens are grown in Coolum Beach. We also work with Organica Floret Rose Farm they are located in Eudlo They are a certified Chemical free Flower Farm. (Being chemical free has ensured no bees are harmed in the growing process of the flowers.) We work together to deliver the most beautiful edible flowers and microgreens on the Sunshine Coast.

Do you consider your small business to be organic and/or sustainable?

The feedback that we receive from our customer base has always been very positive regarding the quality, consistency and environmental impact of our product. We grow everything with organic methods, meaning no chemicals are used in the growing process.

We grow both indoor and outdoor to maintain consistency throughout the seasons for our customers and have invested in solar to maintain year round growth.

What does sustainability mean to your small business?

We are excited to say we are plastic free, all our packaging is “eco friendly”; compostable, renewable, sustainable and BPA free. This is a priority for us and we are proud to be part of the sustainability movement.

What makes you stand out in your industry?

In addition to supplying local businesses, we love to educate people on the amazing health benefits of these tiny greens, whether this be in person or through social media (@nurturedgreens).

Being a family business we felt the importance of keeping our relationships personal with our clients so we can continue to deliver the best quality and maximum freshness from our farm to them. We grow to order and harvest the same day we deliver.

VanillaFood’s favourite product from Nurtured is…

Baby amaranth for its bright colour and high protein sources. VF use amaranth as a garnish and in salads for its sweet and earthy taste.
